It’s not just equipping the war fighter, but it’s also equipping our first responders … we’re protecting freedom and we’re also saving lives with our products.

Business Challenge

Keeping aircraft combat ready accounts for some 70 percent of their total product life cycle costs. Bell wanted to explore whether predicting and preventing equipment failure using equipment sensor and other IoT data had the potential to drastically lower those costs.

Working with IBM Global Business Services – Asset Optimization, Bell piloted the IBM Maximo - Equipment Maintenance Assistant solution, which uses IoT technology and powerful IBM Watson deep-learning algorithms to increase equipment readiness. Bell applied the AI technology to over 100,000 historical defect records, tying each failure prediction back to a root cause at the part or component level. The solution can help Bell track time-on-wing for critical components and predict the remaining useful life of components. By using AI to predict problems and take proactive action, Bell can keep small problems from growing into bigger and more costly ones.
