There’s good news for users of AlchemyLanguage. IBM has made a number of improvements to the API as it evolved to Watson Natural Language Understanding. Here’s a quick rundown of why you should consider moving to Watson Natural Language Understanding now.

Natural Language Understanding has the most complete stack of advanced natural language processing capabilities on the market. It includes identification of entities, relationships, concepts, semantic roles, categories, sentiment, emotion and other metadata that can be applied to any textual data. You can either provide the text to the API yourself or point Natural Language Understanding toward a target.

1. Simple pricing

Natural Language Understanding has a simplified pricing structure that is based on the types of metadata you extract and the amount of data you analyze. IBM has decreased the lowest tier pricing and reduced the cost of incorporating custom models from Watson Knowledge Studio. Natural Language Understanding plans are simpler as well with only two plans: free and standard.

It’s easy to track and manage your usage of Natural Language Understanding by setting up email notifications on the Bluemix usage dashboard. You can be alerted to spending thresholds you specify and can edit your spending notification as your needs change. That way, you know what you’re using and spending, so you don’t have any surprises.

2. Free forever plan

Now with the Natural Language Understanding free forever plan, you can get access to one custom model without spending a dime. Using custom models, you can customize Natural Language Understanding’s ability to recognize entities and relationships and tailor your solution towards the domain or industry you’re working in. You use Watson Knowledge Studio to customize Natural Language Understanding’s understanding of those entities and relationships and train Watson on the unique language of your industry. Knowledge Studio also has a free plan, so you can go ahead and build your custom model with Watson Knowledge Studio. Then, you can deploy it to Natural Language Understanding — all for free!

3. Simplified API

Natural Language Understanding retains the core functions of AlchemyLanguage, but through a simplified API. You can use the same AlchemyLanguage features you know and love, either by calling each feature directly or by making calls to multiple features at once. Natural Language Understanding’s API is consistent with the rest of the Watson services, so if you’ve used other Watson services, you’ll find that Natural Language Understanding works similarly. The core capabilities with AlchemyLanguage have been rearchitected to run natively on Bluemix with Natural Language Understanding. As a Natural Language Understanding user, you’ll be able to take advantage of the continuous improvements to the underlying Bluemix platform.

Stay tuned for more improvements

IBM is continuing to improve Natural Language Understanding will only continue to improve from here with new capabilities, languages and improved customization options. If you’ve been using AlchemyAPI for similar applications, the migration guide gives you details about moving to Natural Language Understanding. As of April 7, 2017 it’s no longer possible to create a new instance of AlchemyAPI on Bluemix, but existing service instances will be supported until March 7, 2018. But to take advantage of the benefits of Natural Language Understanding, you should consider moving now.

To get started, you can try out Natural Language Understanding on Bluemix with the free forever plan and check our our Software Development Kits (SDKs). If you want to learn more about Natural Language Understanding, visit our website or watch this video to get an overview of the service.
