Three current storage trends that will surprise you

The pace of change in storage has never been faster. From the mid-1990s to a few years ago, storage area network (SAN)-based disk systems doubled capacity every couple of years and got faster, but otherwise stayed the same. It was relatively simple to plan for the future. In 4 years, you could purchase one new storage system to replace 4 or 5 existing systems. All data was stored in the data center and was only left the data center to be mirrored to another site or backed up offsite for disaster recovery.

Today the world of cognitive and cloud produce requirements that couldn’t be foreseen just a few years ago. Disk systems which once stored most data in the data center are quickly being replaced by all-flash storage. More importantly, the idea that data stays in the data center is long gone. Most enterprises are storing some data in the cloud and that trend is going to continue to grow.
