Smarter Computing: Tomorrow Ready

Share this post:

In the past few years, we have seen many clients embrace the opportunities that a Smarter Planet creates — the world is undeniably instrumented, intelligent and interconnected — and this is changing how the systems of the world work.

According to the 2012 IBM Global CEO study, CEOs identified technology as the most important external force impacting their organizations through 2015.

Business and IT leaders are asking important questions regarding what IT can and should deliver. Questions like:

  • Is my infrastructure optimized for the greatest efficiency of all my applications and resources?
  • Does my infrastructure provide rich, actionable insight?
  • Does my infrastructure leverage new technologies—mobile, social, cloud—to deliver an excellent customer experience at every touchpoint?

Ultimately, their real question is: Will my infrastructure block or enable the change needed to compete in a world of information-centric computing?

IBM has developed an approach for the IT infrastructure required to enable the opportunities of a Smarter Planet. We believe Smarter Computing represents the key elements of IT that enterprises need today to be tomorrow ready. That means to leverage cloud, unlock the power of big data and secure critical information.

Leveraging cloud speeds time to market and improves efficiency. Sixty percent of CIOs cited cloud computing as critical to their plans, up from 33 percent three years ago, seeing the potential value it can bring through collaboration, simplicity and analytics. With cloud, enterprises can drive new service models and business changes quickly; and create an efficient, scalable, secure infrastructure.

Unlocking the power of big data enables organizations to gain insight from the massive volumes of data that exist within and outside the enterprise, in real time. Eighty-three percent of CIOs ranked business intelligence and analytics as high priority in their visionary plans. Harnessing the explosive growth of data is the only way they can gain the insights that will drive business decisions.

Securing critical information allows companies to protect customer, financial and enterprise data while enhancing compliance to security policies in IT systems. Today, security threats are more sophisticated. The average IT infrastructure is attacked 60,000 times each day. Thus the necessity of safeguarding data and improving compliance cannot be understated.

Smarter Computing is embodied in IBM’s systems, software and services. IBM’s purpose is to deliver clients an infrastructure that is tomorrow ready through a unique portfolio of systems (recently announced zEnterprise EC12, the next generation of Power Systems 770, 780 and 795, PureSystems and Smarter Storage). In addition, IBM provides software and services expertise that address clients’ evolving needs around cloud, data and security … to enable Smarter Computing every day.

Don’t forget: you can also follow the conversations and information in various social channels, including Facebook and Twitter. Stay tuned and learn how IBM is helping organizations around the world turn opportunities into outcomes!

Some time ago, having the words “cloud” and “mainframe” in the same phrase was considered implausible or even impossible. We could say this feeling still exists among a lot of ...read more
