For many colleges and universities, Spring generally marks the time of year for commencement ceremonies. For graduates, it can also signify the start of their job search. Thus, this is the perfect time to shine the spotlight on two valuable resources available to IBM Power Systems Academic Initiative (PSAI) members: a job board for entry-level positions and internships in North America and an experienced professional job board for global job opportunities. At these sites, job seekers will find a wide variety of exciting computer-related technology opportunities available in business, health care, and government to name a few.
Good news for students and educators
We introduced the job boards about four years ago in response to requests from clients who face skills shortages as large numbers of “baby boomers” ready for retirement. This circumstance provides excellent opportunities for graduates from PSAI member schools, since we continue to see strong demand for Power Systems expertise, with an overwhelming need for RPG programmers and IBM i system administration skills. In fact, our entry-level job board averages over 740 new positions and internships each year, with opportunities posted daily.
Similarly, this also presents a positive landscape for educators. As our IBM clients and partners build their pipeline of talent for the 21st century, they will be interested in developing partnerships with educators worldwide who are willing to enhance their curricula to help students develop Power Systems skills.
PSAI job boards pay off
Our current PSAI members have already seen firsthand how building these partnerships and gaining access to resources–like our job boards–connects skilled students to the growing number of job opportunities. Here’s a sample of what we’re hearing:
“I’ve been working hard to spread the word about IBM i and that job opportunities are ramping up as retirements continue in the field.”
— Char Parker, Computer Information Systems instructor, Muskegon Community College. Recently, she says she finds that companies are even willing to mentor entry-level students by providing internship opportunities and she encourages colleges to “expose students to the Power Systems job board.”
Gregory Simmons, a course instructor at Scott Regional Tech Center in Michigan is very aware of the need for entry-level RPG programmers. He also works full time at Jack Henry & Associates, Inc., a local financial services software company with a large IBM i customer base. Simmons says:
“Hiring managers are nearly always looking for new RPG programmers either for new positions due to growth or for back-filling purposes. The Power Systems job board is a great source to connect students with these opportunities.”
