How BPM is providing healthcare as unique as your DNA

There are over 7.2 billion people on this earth, and every single one of us is unique. Yet, since the beginning of modern medicine, medical practices and standards have been based on a one-size-fits-all system.

In reality, our different genetic makeups often result in very different reactions to the same medical treatments. These differing reactions can sometimes lead to serious consequences. There are more than 2 million serious adverse drug reactions every year in the U.S.

Coriell Life Sciences is an innovative non-profit institute that aims to change this staggering statistic, by gathering genetic analyses from patients all over the world and providing the information to medical professionals that help them correctly prescribe medicine with exponentially lower risk.

This is an extremely complex task for a small organization, which is why Coriell needed Smarter Process: a flexible solution that would work across countries and providers.

The institute chose an IBM solution that draws on IBM Smarter Process capabilities like Business Process Management (BPM) and Operational Decision Management (ODM) to drive the overall process flow. All this while incorporating cutting edge IBM Watson cognitive technology as a key part of the process, helping physicians model potential medication regimens on each patient’s specific genetic profile.

This non-profit has achieved unprecedented speed to market, without having to install or staff the supporting IT infrastructure. With IBM BPM on Cloud—the SaaS based version of IBM’s market leading BPM software—it took Coriell only a couple of months full build out its solution. And, only three weeks to start generating revenue.

“We can very quickly spin up a relationship with a hospital system or individual physician that doesn’t require them to do anything differently than they do today,” says Scott Megill, Coriell’s president and CEO.

“So they have their existing electronic medical record systems, and we write the rules that allow us to interface with that. They’ll use their existing billing and accounting systems, and we write the rules that allow us to interface with that. It gives us a degree of flexibility and a speed to market that’s really unmatched.”
