Watson’s cognitive technology can sort sentiment in social media; it can “see” and analyze medical images to help doctors. It is today’s most powerful AI platform, being applied to everything from the most cutting edge cancer research to oil exploration, educational toys and the world’s most complex financial systems. Watson’s capabilities were born in IBM Research. And so too will its next generation.
A look at what Watson is doing today, and a sneak peek at some of the exciting things Watson will do next, will be on display at World of Watson at Las Vegas’ Mandalay Bay, October 24-27. Join us for a full day of talks on Monday, in the Mariners A ballroom, where researchers from IBM’s labs will be on hand to present the future of AI. During these interactive talks, my colleagues and I will discuss everything from platform, software and underlying technology innovation, to new ways AI can make sense of data and augment human intelligence by working side-by-side with humans to accelerate and improve our ability to make decisions. Projects related to computers and conversations, the core development of AI and transforming industries with AI will be discussed and demoed.
We’ll also be offering hands-on demonstrations of our work throughout the entire conference at our demo booth (visit us at booth 80 on the Cognitive Concourse if you’re planning on being there!).
World of Watson is your chance to get a glimpse of what is brewing in the labs, and our chance to get feedback from early adopters and find clients interested in test driving some of these innovations.

The heart of every cognitive application is its machine learning models, which you must train appropriately to understand and respond correctly to users of your cognitive application. But it is hard to train these models so that they produce good results in your application. This IBM Research project aims to help non-experts select and train machine learning models for cognitive applications.
Home, Office Building Operations: Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and the Internet of Things
This demo showcases the new possibilities in home and office building operations arising from cognitive technologies. New capabilities, such as reasoning and machine learning can help overcome scalability and interface issues and allow an effective and energy-efficient operation. Incorporating real-time data from thousands of sensors via Watson IoT Platform, the project uses a semantic model to deliver a cognitive solution with virtual and augmented reality interfaces to improve building operations.
Analyzing the Social Media of the Zika Epidemic in Brazil
This demonstration presents social media analytics tools that IBM Research is providing to Fiocruz, the largest health monitoring laboratory in Brazil, to monitor and fight the Zika and related mosquito-borne diseases in Brazil. The demo presents tools for gathering and analyzing text and images shared on social media, as well as intelligently aggregating trending images and topics.
Next-Gen Customer Service: Using Watson to Understand Emotions
This demonstration explores the impact and development of emotional AI in technical conversations with customers. IBM Researchers are developing a virtual assistant augmented with emotion-sensing capabilities that allow it to detect and understand emotions, and reply in an appropriate manner, by expressing different tones, such as empathy, apology, cheerfulness or gratitude. The demonstration presents a real use case of customer support, in which a virtual agent assists customers experiencing a technical problem in a product they have purchased.
Fashion is a multi-billion dollar industry with social and economic implications, worldwide. Most fashion e-commerce portals are trying to be branded as not just online warehouses for buying, but also a fashion destination. Luxury fashion houses want to create a similar in-store experience for customers visiting their high-end stores. This project explores the development of a suite of cognitive assistants for the fashion and retail industry around visual search, natural language search, recommendation and trends.
Aging in Place: Cognitive Solutions for Senior Citizens
This IBM Cognitive Eldercare “Aging in Place” demonstration leverages a network of connected devices, sensors and cognitive systems in a smart home environment that creates a holistic view of a senior citizen to better understand patterns in day-to-day activities. By combining the data from smart homes and wearables, as well as healthcare, financial and social data, we can detect when changes occur in individual’s life, environment and behavior – then proactively alert family members and caregivers.
