The world’s most accurate weather forecasting system

Share this post:

No one is immune to the weather. Increasingly volatile, weather drives the decisions we make each day and can take thousands of lives and cost billions in economic value each year. Having access to accurate and reliable weather information is increasingly important as the number of severe weather events continues to rise. However, global forecasts have lacked accuracy for years. This is due to a lack of specialized weather equipment and models that update infrequently (~every 6-12 hours) and at a resolution too wide to capture many weather phenomena (~10km ).

The newly introduced IBM Global High-Resolution Atmospheric Forecasting System (IBM GRAF) helps democratize weather forecasts so people, businesses and governments — anywhere in the world — can make better decisions.

But how?

IBM GRAF is basically a high-precision, rapidly updating global weather model that updates hourly and at a 3 km resolution to provide a clearer picture of weather activity around the globe. Three main pillars differentiate IBM GRAF from other similar systems:

  1. Improved mapping of the global atmosphere
  2. Better data and observations
  3. First-ever operational global weather model to run on GPU-accelerated servers

The capabilities of IBM GRAF illustrated above with the substantial resolution difference

Regardless of where someone lives, people and businesses around the world now have access to the world’s most accurate weather forecasting available – so that they can make better decisions.

In the video below, you can learn more about the world’s most accurate weather forecasting system IBM GRAF. Furthermore, you will get to see why it is so important to strive for as accurate forecasts as possible in every corner of the world:

At IBM and The Weather Company, we are committed to helping organizations and consumers make faster, smarter decisions by combining the world’s most accurate weather data with industry-leading technologies such as AI, analytics, and the Internet of Things.
