Achieve higher ROI by modernizing your databases with data virtualization and containerization

Databases are required to support much more than they have at any previous time. They must accommodate multiple types of data from myriad sources within hybrid and multicloud environments. At the same time, databases must drive efficiency and deliver outstanding time-to-value and return on investment (ROI). Faster deployment and cost savings with a containerized database

Traditional databases can take hours to deploy on top of weeks of planning and configuration. A containerized database like Db2, which resides on the Red Hat® OpenShift® platform, can take fewer than 5 minutes to deploy. In a 2017 study commissioned by Red Hat and others, that containerization allowed 73% of users to develop a more consistent deployment process.[1] This allows the database to provide additional value more quickly and reach the desired level of ROI much faster.

Fully integrated environments also reduce the manual intervention that traditional deployments often demand from employees, freeing them to focus on higher value work and reducing the possibility of human error. Both contribute to a smoother ramp-up to generating the insights the company desires. Administration and support often contribute to as much as 60% of a database’s cost of ownership. For every 100 virtual machines (VM), 30 labor hours per month can be saved by simply automating patches. And operational cost savings of up to 26% can be achieved with automated back-ups, upgrades and updates.

And when it’s time to expand capabilities surrounding the database – whether data collection, governance, analytics, or AI-related – similarly containerized capabilities can be easily implemented and integrated with Db2 on the Cloud Pak for Data platform.

Hybrid and multicloud flexibility delivers value faster 

When a container resides on a platform like OpenShift, it can be deployed anywhere that OpenShift can be deployed. In practice, this means that a containerized database can be placed on-premises, in a private or public cloud, or across the platforms of multiple vendors while still delivering a seamless experience to users. Seamless hybrid infrastructures can then be created with more stable workloads using on-premises resources and more variable workloads that rely on scaling across one or more public clouds. Perhaps because of this, Db2 on Cloud Pak for Data has demonstrated 38% lower IT infrastructure and development platform costs per application.

Multiple storage options provide additional flexibility. Db2 on Cloud Pak for Data offers container-based software-defined storage such as Red Hat OpenShift Container Storage and IBM Cloud® Storage. These storage options enable clients to spin up containers quickly, minimizing the time and effort required for testing and development teams to deliver results.

Virtualization, governance and AI improve database efficiency

To reach its full potential as an effective driver of AI, a database must be surrounded with virtualization and governance capabilities. Data virtualization enables access to data from a single point no matter where the data resides, eliminating expensive migration or time-consuming ETL processes. One report found that virtualization reduced ETL requests by 25% to 65%.

In addition, data can be governed at that single access point in order to ensure the data is cleansed and the users’ access has been properly verified. Users can have confidence in the accuracy of the data, and in turn, companies can have greater confidence in the accuracy of insights delivered by the analytics and AI models they create.

This level of data access and governance is particularly important for Db2 due to the built-in AI features. These include machine learning query optimization for greater efficiency, confidence-based querying—which returns query results with probabilities of accuracy instead of simple “yes or no” answers—graph database functionality for relationship-based insights, and full blockchain support to more easily leverage this increasingly important technology.
