For more than a century, IBM has believed that diversity and inclusion are business priorities. We believe that diversity, equity, and inclusion are not only policies and programs, but part of the values and practices essential to foster our company’s culture and our competitive success.

In Mexico, IBM began our LGBT+ inclusion story in 2001 with the establishment of our first group of employees volunteering to carry out inclusion initiatives for the LGBTQ+ community. In 2004, we expanded our IBMers same-sex couple benefits. Our efforts continued when in 2008 we extended the medical policy to cover the treatment of HIV and AIDS.

The year 2014 was really significant for LGBTQ+ inclusion in Mexico, because IBM with American Express, Accenture, Google and Scotiabank, Pride Connection Mexico,co-launched a group of companies that share best practices around LGBTQ+ inclusion. Also, in that year we launched the Mexican Federation of LGBTQ+ Entrepreneurs and the LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce in Mexico. In 2016 we opened our first gender-neutral bathroom and in 2017 we hosted the first Lesbians Who Tech Summit, giving a safe space to lesbian and queer women who work in technology to celebrate their achievements and successes.

IBM has also been certified for two consecutive years, 2018 and 2019, with the Equity MX distinctive, issued by Human Rights Campaign. This recognition certifies us as one of the best companies in Mexico to work for the LGBTQ+ community.

Continuing with the search for equal opportunities for the LGBTQ+ community, we proudly announce that as of May 2019, IBM will provide medical coverage for its transgender employees, including sex reassignment surgery and hormonal treatment. IBM is the first company in Mexico to provide this benefit. This effort guarantees inclusion and equal opportunities for LGBTQ+ employees, ensuring that every person who works at IBM can be who they are in and out of work, and gives us the privilege of working with people with different life experiences that bring diversity to the work teams.
