In the Age of Transformation and Change—This is Why I Choose IBM

I have been in IBM for over 9 years and have handled a plethora of roles over time. I started off in treasury and am currently heading strategy and planning for the Real Estate Strategy & Operations (RESO) for India and South Asia. When I look back at my journey from where I started to where I am now, it seems like two ends of the spectrum. The challenge of doing new things, getting out of my comfort zone and the satisfaction of mastering the uncharted territory is what landed me in my current role.

IBM as an organization is all about its employees. It relentlessly reinvents new technology, works creatively and collaboratively, and gives you the opportunity as well as the learning platforms to upskill yourself to move along the journey of your career path. The work culture in IBM is conducive to learning while on the job and it invests in its employees by helping them develop the skills and knowledge that are not only required to succeed but to also stay relevant with the changing landscape of the workforce and industry. Given the magnitude of the organization and its offerings, I am constantly challenged to think out of the box, work with multiple and cross-functional stakeholders and gain that overall satisfaction of being able to contribute at the grassroots level.

My Mantra for Managing a Millennial Workforce

It is important to understand, or at least try to understand, the mindset of this generation. Through my experience, I believe that millennials and Gen Zs prefer a straightforward attitude. They expect clarity and an environment that lets them express their ideas and work freely. They are open to receiving candid feedback and don’t shy away from giving it either. This is a lot different from the mindset of earlier generations where “slow and steady wins the race”. Now, it’s all about instant recognition, public recognition like going out as a team to celebrate, or using IBM tools to reward and appreciate achievements.

What has also worked for me is transparency and honesty with my team regarding their potential and performance. I constantly engage with them to upskill themselves, discuss their aspirations with an open mind and provide adequate opportunities for them to branch out and journey on the roadmap that they have set for their careers.

I have always believed in challenging the status quo with the ultimate objective of achieving the goal with integrity. This drives the team to continuously think out of the box and has helped us in coming up with unique solutions and opportunities.

I’d like to sign off by saying that even though IBM is one of the pioneers in the industry and has been around for eons, it has kept its mind young and is a great place to have a rewarding and successful career.
