IoT Exchange Europe a resounding success
Highlights from our events in London, Paris and Berlin
IBM® IoT Exchange Europe is now over and we were delighted to welcome thousands of IBM Business Partners and clients from throughout the region. Systems engineers, business managers, and many others joined IBM executives and solution experts in three cities. There, they enjoyed several days of learning, networking and participation in hands-on demonstrations.
Premiering in London on 11 June, the event began with a full day of seminars, discussions, and time to socialize. Then we traveled to Paris for a one-day event on 13 June. Berlin hosted the final event with two days of intensive learning on 18-19 June.
If you attended IoT Exchange Europe, you’ll want to read this recap. And if were unable to participate, you’ll want to know the highlights so you can plan to register for our next conference series.
Unlock new value from data with IoT and AI
The theme of our program was also the promise that underscored all our activities. Our intent was to provide current information about AI and demonstrate how better performance can be achieved with the analytic power of Watson IoT™. Our three Academies – Engineering Academy, Maximo® Academy and TRIRIGA® Academy – emphasized the competitive advantages that can be achieved using this technology. Informative demonstrations showed the solutions in action, and many even provided hands-on opportunities to see how effectively they performed.
Opening Keynote: IoT Data + AI: Driving Your Operational Transformation
The event’s keynote addresses were provided by IBM executives. They’re recognized experts in the changes driven by Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI). Because they deal directly with global organizations, they know the operational challenges in a competitive marketplace. These speakers shared valuable experiences and insights that their audiences were eager to hear.
In all three cities, Joe Berti, VP Offering Management, Watson IOT, discussed how IoT and AI are at the center of helping transform operations in asset intensive industries. Developments in these fields are helping businesses operate more efficiently and effectively, and innovate quickly at a lower cost. It’s the asset of the future, he told an attentive audience.
Andrew Bennett, WW Sales Leader, IBM Watson IoT, shared how IBM, our clients, and Business Partners use AI to transform operations today. Additionally, he discussed how they will continue to do so in the future. In a Quick Bytes episode, created at IoT Exchange in Berlin, Andy spoke about asset performance management (APM), and suggested that viewers conduct their own online APM self assessment.
During her keynote presentation, Dibbe Edwards, Vice President, IBM Watson IoT Offering Management gave some alarming numbers to support the need for better engineering management, “80 percent of churn and 50 percent of defects in engineering projects are due to poor requirements. IBM Engineering Lifecycle Management can make your process and models better and better with AI.”
IBM clients delivered compelling stories about the advantages of Watson IoT
There’s nothing more gratifying than hearing our customers speak about how Watson AI-powered solutions enabled them to improve their productivity and performance. In all three countries, we hosted representatives from organizations that have benefited from our services, and who were happy to share their experiences with others.
In London, attendees heard from a representative from Rolls Royce who spoke to a packed room about how they use IBM Maximo in their aviation division. Other IBM clients who presented their stories in London included Defence Infrastructure Organization, and Visteon. We cannot thank them enough for their participation, and for the experiences they shared with IoT Exchange Europe attendees.
In Paris, we featured several clients who also participated in the London event. They were joined by L’Oreal, Michelin, KONE, Enocean, Accorinvest, Sigfox and Sanofi. Their info-packed presentations provided real-world examples of how the innovative application of AI can impact such areas as asset performance and organizational outcomes.
Berlin provided the opportunity to host two days of events, and included many more clients who had compelling stories to share. Among them were such notable organizations as Depuy Synthes, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Sodexo, Bombardier, Waternet, Hella, Enav and AVM.
Dr. Bernhard Rieger of Continental Tire gave an informative presentation in which he said, “Continental is building a Chassis and Safety Holistic Engineering Platform — and IBM is at the core of the whole thing. We are enabling collaboration for 10,000 engineers.” He also added, “With cloud, we went from idea to ‘minimum viable service’ in six months with IBM.”
One of our esteemed clients, Karantis 360, provided stimulating presentations at IoT Exchange events in all three European cities! We thank them – and all those who joined us – for their tremendous support.
IoT Exchange Europe: Quotes to contemplate
Throughout the events, we heard some lively discussions about IoT and AI – from guests, and our client presenters. I’d like to share with you a few particularly poignant statements.
Matthias Hartmann, GM of IBM in Germany, Switzerland and Austria said, “Technology in and of itself is not the answer. “ He added, “It starts with a culture and drive for innovation.”
Claudia Heussen of IBM told her audience, “Data ownership enables the freedom to act. This is the cornerstone of how IBM thinks about and approaches cloud and IoT.”
Andrew Bennett advised, “You don’t wake up in the morning and think, ‘I need some more IoT!’ You are running critical parts of business; and technology is an enabler for efficient operations.”
The common current running through these thoughts is that technology is simply a means to the end. The ultimate goal is greater efficiency and better performance for people and operations.
Next stop for IoT Exchange is Sydney, Australia
In summary, we were honored to host so many people eager to learn more about IoT, AI and how they can extract greater value from their data. We hope it was an interesting, enlightening and rewarding experience for all our guests.
If you’re in the Pacific region, you won’t want to miss our next two-day IoT Exchange, in Sydney on 23-24 July, 2019. We’ll be featuring three info-packed academies (Engineering Academy, TRIRIGA Academy, and Maximo Academy) plus three inspirational keynote addresses.
