IBM, Hidden Figures the movie, and opportunities for education and diversity in tech

Progression in technology comes with progression of education. Hidden Figures, a 20th Century Fox film released January 6, 2017, highlights the opportunities involved when intelligent, courageous women take strides to create the math to send astronauts to the moon. At CES this year, I had the opportunity to sit down before a panel of very educated, inspired people on the opportunities which come through STEM education, advocacy for diversity, and implications of the film.

While this entire hour encouraged and cultivated an ideal of inclusion, the conversation surrounding exposure to these stories and technology is what encourages disruption and innovation. Rashid Davis, founding principal of the IBM program PTECH, stated “Disruption starts from within (homes, schools, families). We have an opportunity to uncover the “hidden figures” the ones laying the ground work, the ones creating change, and those who are involved in the background.”

As a women in the workforce, especially technology, I left this session feeling inspired to acquire more education. I feel honored to work for a company which is so inclusive of all people, and always has strived to be. I am proud to be an IBMer
