Social Data: The Joy of Sharing

One of the big themes of 2013 was a shift towards data sharing models in wireless markets (Social Data).  In essence, if I buy a $10 data package with 20GB of data, I can share 2GB with my friend – on the same network – who’s just run out of credit / data.  There are some complex arrangements necessary behind the scene, in terms of charging, balance management, aging non-monetary balances, and accounting, not to mention the additional load on real-time transaction processing.  Technology marches on, however, and what was once an architectural nightmare is now quite feasible, even at great scale.  The big question is what does this do to consumption behavior?  I’ve been blogging about this over on the IBM Smarter Planet blog today.
