What is the “BEST” way to approach mobile in your enterprise?

Well am happy to report that there is in fact a BEST way to address your enterprise mobility needs. Its critical to understand that Enterprise Mobility can be as empowering and enjoyable as mobile for the end consumers like that of angry birds or even the mint app.

The BEST approach basically entails getting back to the roots of any enterprise application, which is the “B”usiness Use Case or “B”usiness Pain Point. What we would always look for is those two or three hard hitting business problems that can be transformed by the use of Mobile as the medium of transaction.

As time has told us, and the last eight years as a testament to the smart phone revolution, “E”nd User Context is always and has always been at the root of any product or software success. Take for example the Foreman Grill, or the Keurig Coffee machines, all of these are examples of where the end user experience has been put as the foremost priority. So having the same point of focus while developing enterprise mobile apps to understand your end users context helps immensely. Is it a plant inventory manager, or is it a offshore rig worker, is it a research scientist, or is it a elderly person, bearing in mind this changes the way we conceive and develop mobile apps.

Once we’ve got all these figured out, comes the discussion on what would be the “S”trategy we would apply for the application pilot, mass adoption etc. While this may sound like the most important thing to do at the get go, resisting yourself to get to the business case, and end user context goes a long way. As we’ve seen enough evidence to that fact that “Usability drives Adoption, and in turn drives ROI or IT Investment Value”.

While being a technologist gives me a lot of adrenaline, in the case of mobility, the “T”echnology platform decision does come as a derivative of all the above imperatives, and hence not trying to get ahead of yourself is very crucial. The saying “Technology is not the hammer, for which you’re trying to find a nail [aka business use case]” , its in fact the reversed in the mobile paradigm.
