Patient Matching: The Start of the Healthcare Master Data Management (MDM) Journey

There are heighteDigital Hospital 12644846ned conversations in healthcare, particularly in the US, about mastering domains of data, including patients, providers, locations, and terminology.  And, I’m having a lot more conversations than how to manage reference data, which is more than just the ICD 9 to ICD 10 crosswalks that are vexing for many organizations in the United States (US).

Yet with all of these diverse and complex conversations, we can’t lose sight of the basics.  We must be able to accurately, consistently, and on a scalable basis identify a patient at a single point of care, as well as across the care continuum.  The US Office of National Coordinator (ONC) has done considerable work over the past year in this area, and I share my thoughts as the discussion unfolds. Read my thoughts on BigData Hub by clicking here

The recently released AHIMA Practice Brief, Managing the Integrity of Patient Identity in HIE, highlights the complexity and implications of this subject, as well as best practices.  I was delighted to work with several fellow AHIMA members and HIM professions in helping shape this brief.
