Social Business for Defence – Why Bother?

Note that this post follows on from my recent blog entitled “Social Business for Defence – A Cure for Internal Amnesia & External Ignorance?”

Defence & Intelligence Organisations are facing an unprecedented set of challenged as shown in Figure 1 below.

Figure 1 – Defence Challenges

Against a backdrop of budget cuts they face a totally unpredictable, technology savvy and asymmetric threat whilst having to cope with a vast variety of mission types, ranging from offensive operations to natural disaster recovery.

Coalition operations are now the norm. The need to team with military counterparts from other Countries and a vast array of other Government departments and NGOs adds considerable complexity.

Government is starting to embrace Social Media technologies as shown in the Figure 2 below to ensure it is:

  1. Connected – with citizens, leaders and partners to correctly position their policies and services
  2. Open – to embrace the drives towards open and transparent Government
  3. Responsive – to use information and insight to anticipate and address evolving situations or opportunities
  4. Secure – so that appropriate controls and protection is in place to prevent leakage or contamination of sensitive information

Military organisations share many of these pressures hence can learn from these early initiatives to transform.

Agree? Disagree? Disinterested? I welcome your feedback / participation preferably via this blog or by e-mail / telephone if you prefer. AND watch this space for WHAT Social Media can offer a Defence organisation.
