(4) Unlocking the corporate brain
Introducing “systems of engagement” unlocks a collective brain, by tapping into the knowledge and expertise across and beyond the formal boundaries of a company. “If we knew what we know, we would be three times as productive” quoted one CEO. The very recent IBV study Collective Intelligence, launched by Denis Brousseau at Lotusphere 2012, calls this “capitalising on the crowd”. Companies are increasingly discovering and using the power of this collective brain, also outside of the company. One telling example is the Canadian shoe designer Fluevog, who launched the concept of “Open Source Footwear”, inviting the public to send their own shoe designs and selecting one design each quarter for production based on (again) customer voting. Since they launched Open Source Footwear, this became one of the most visited pages on their entire website. And, the designs made by the fans are among Fluevog´s top selling shoes!
