IBM Q: an introduction

Share this post:

Quantum computing is emerging as a key technology that is likely to have a significant impact in the years to come. It is fundamentally different computation model that is built on quantum physics. This field has moved from the back-water of physics, to a key area of research in physics, and now is at the brink of entering engineering domain with real applications expected in the near future.

This talk is divided into two parts: (i) history and background and (ii) IBM Q. In the first part we will give a brief historical background to the field of quantum computing; we will then describe what quantum computing is, how is it different from classical computing, and why is it interesting.

In the second part, we will focus on IBM Q—our flagship quantum computing project—and will provide IBM’s point-of-view on the subject, viz. what we are doing and where we are heading? We then will give some pointers to domains where we expect first applications to emerge. Finally, we will provide an overview of IBM Q Experience and QISKit frameworks that can be used to run experiments on real quantum computing hardware

Through this talk technologists will learn about a cutting edge technology that has potential to be disruptive. While this technology is in its infancy, with IBM Q putting the hardware on cloud, companies/developers can now program the hardware and experiment with it. This gives an opportunity to understand the technology and to gain first-mover advantage to develop solutions as the technology matures.

NOTE: As an aside, we will have an actual IBM Q prototype at the event. It is a marvelous piece of engineering and it looks gorgeous as well. We encourage folks to come talk to us at the booth to understand more about the project and how to get started.
