Confessions of an Ex-Musician

Share this post:

When I was younger, I played bass and sang in a local garage band called The Visitors. All five of us had day jobs, but on weekends we were the house band at our town’s most popular night spot. While that time is full of great memories, for me the absolute best part of that experience was the collaboration: the shared creative energy of working out instrumental and vocal arrangements together in rehearsals, and the ultimate thrill of spontaneous collaboration during a performance.

Krayer - Oslo Philharmonic -inblogUnless you’re a one-person band, music is a collaborative endeavor – different pieces coming together to create something greater than the sum of its parts. Our little band was one example of this; the Oslo Philharmonic is another.

The Oslo Philharmonic (Oslo-Filharmonien or OF) is a symphony orchestra based in Oslo, Norway. Formed in 1919, the organization employs 108 musicians and 20 administrative personnel and plays around 65 concerts in Oslo each year. The company is organized as a non-profit, self-owned trust and is primarily financed by the Norwegian government.

Like most musical entities, Oslo Philharmonic wanted to spend more time performing and less time and money on administrative activities – for reasons strategic as well as aesthetic. To maintain their position as one of Europe’s leading orchestras, OF needed to move spending away from back-office operations and toward revenue-driving activities, like international touring.

Oslo Philharmonic worked with IBM Premier Business Partner Item Consulting to migrate to a collaboration platform based on IBM Connections Cloud, and featuring IBM Verse email—shrinking on-premises infrastructure costs and driving investment in performances. Read the full story of their transformation to learn about their experience, and its positive impact on the entire Oslo Philharmonic organization. It’s a great story that’s relevant for musicians, non-musicians, and ex-musicians alike.
