IBM serves up 3 IT lessons from Wimbledon

Wimbledon is not resting easy on its history of success.

The organization behind The Championships, Wimbledon embraces new technology and best practices in pursuit of its goal of continuing to produce one of the greatest competitions in sports. For decades, IBM has been the proud technology collaborator.

Many of the same IT principles and tools that Wimbledon uses can also apply to business. Here are three IT lessons from Wimbledon, as well as some examples of how businesses are using these same solutions:

1. AI: Building a personalized experience

With the help of IBM, Wimbledon has been an early adopter of AI. Last year, the tournament successfully piloted a sophisticated match highlights tool. This year, that tool is getting a significant upgrade.

With the speed of content creation a real differentiator in the sports business, Wimbledon wanted even quicker access to high-quality video. To meet this need, this year’s highlights solution will take a feed directly from the on-site internet protocol television (IPTV) system to cut production time by around 15 minutes.

IBM experts have also trained the AI system to better recognize player emotion. This increases the quality of the output. To further assist the team, IBM even created a new editorial dashboard.

All of this enables Wimbledon to take better advantage of match footage and build a more compelling and personalized experience for fans.

An example from Kone: Each day, billions of people use elevators and escalators to reach their workplaces, shopping destinations and homes. Kone chose IBM Watson Internet of Things (IoT) to connect, remotely monitor and optimize more than 1.1 million elevators and escalators in buildings worldwide.

By analyzing sensor data, Kone now can predict, identify and resolve issues, even before equipment breaks. With real-time visibility from AI-driven insight, Kone can share instantly with their customers. This helps them provide a deeply personalized experience for customers in a similar way to Wimbledon.

2. Cloud: Scalability and application modernization

Wimbledon has a massive audience, but organizers don’t want to worry about scaling up a digital environment hundreds of times in days. They want to focus on their business of running a world-class sporting event.

To solve this problem, Wimbledon used IBM Cloud and its managed service to deliver the highest quality digital experience for 70 million visits in 14 days. By using IBM Watson APIs on the IBM Cloud, the team was not only able to host the event, but also win awards for its excellent execution.

An example from American Airlines: The IBM Cloud provides the same experiences and scalability to enterprise clients, including one of the world’s largest airlines. IBM Cloud has to scale at speed, working flawlessly to deliver the high standards of customer experience that American Airlines customers expect from each interaction with the airline. This provides similar results to what we see when Wimbledon scales to meet the demands of tennis fans throughout the world.

3. Security: Proactive protection

Wimbledon relies on IBM managed security services to protect its most valuable asset:  its brand. Using QRadar Advisor with Watson helps the IBM security team handle more incidents in less time, up to 60 times faster than manual threat investigations. In 2017, IBM security stopped nearly 200 million security events during The Championships.

An example from the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS): This kind of security solution could benefit a large range of different organizations; the ability to use tools such as AI to monitor threats and protect an organization before a breach emerges can be a powerful advantage.

IBM has worked with RCS to build a more proactive approach to security. By linking multiple events across a wide-ranging infrastructure to identify patterns, IBM aims to help the organization solve security challenges before they put the organization at risk. These are many of the same practices IBM uses to help Wimbledon.
