Weather Company eclipseThe last time a total solar eclipse crossed the United States was 8 June 1918. That makes the one that’s taking place Monday, 21 August, a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence. The Weather Channel’s digital properties and Twitter are going to make the most of it.

“This eclipse is a once-in-a-hundred-year event, and we’re going to party like it’s New Year’s Eve,’” said Neil Katz, head of global content and editor-in-chief for The Weather Company, an IBM Business. “This eclipse is a celestial phenomenon and cultural moment that can’t be missed, and we couldn’t imagine a better partner than Twitter to celebrate this with.”

Starting at noon Eastern time, interactive, live coverage of “Chasing Eclipse 2017” will begin, spanning cities across the US, including Stanley, ID; Carbondale, IL; St. Joseph’s, MO; Alliance, NE; Hopkinsville, KY; McMinnville, OR; Belton, SC; Nashville, TN; and Casper, WY. The coverage will be available via Twitter, the Weather Channel app and weather.com.

In addition to high-resolution and aerial drone footage of the celestial event itself, the stream will also include live updates from viewing parties, interactive social segments and even live coverage of an eclipse-themed wedding.

The Weather Company uses IBM Cloud technology and the Watson Internet of Things (IoT) platform to deliver approximately 25 billion forecasts each day.
