Data governance advancesProtecting sensitive data is more important now than ever. Organizations obviously want to protect customer information and their reputations, but beyond that, new regulations are making data governance mandatory.

With the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) set to go into effect in May 2018, IBM announced major improvements to data governance and data science initiatives at an event in Munich this week. According to a press release, “organizations will gain greater understanding and control of their data, while facilitating their ability to prepare for rising data regulations.”

The new solutions include the Open Data Governance Consortium for Apache Atlas, a Unified Governance Software Platform, advances in machine learning and a new catalog of governance tools to help ease access. The consortium aims to make “robust governance capabilities open and free to the public.”

Another addition is StoredIQ, which helps identify types of data stores within an organization.
