During the past year, a new role has evolved at IBM — The Cloud Advisor. Cloud Advisors are a global community of technical resources with deep knowledge of cloud technologies and practices.
Like financial advisors, our mission is to understand trends, regulatory implications, and our clients’ needs in order to help them to set goals and develop plans to achieve their desired outcome. It’s our duty to help clients adopt and transition to the cloud in a manner that makes sense for their unique business requirements. No two families would have identical financial plans and no two businesses should have identical cloud roadmaps.
If you want to be cloud enabled today, the only prerequisite is a credit card. However, being able to purchase your very own virtual server in a public cloud doesn’t mean you should and it’s not the same as having professional guidelines for success.
Similarly, there are numerous financial products that you could buy online, but some might not be appropriate for your risk tolerance, age, or family situation. A Cloud Advisor will look at the long horizon with you and make recommendations based on their experience and judgment as to the best path forward.
The world of cloud technologies is changing at a breakneck pace. It’s almost impossible for a single person to keep up, but Cloud Advisors have an advantage over our financial services’ counterparts. We are not only advocates of the cloud, but consumers as well, using social, mobile, analytics and cloud technologies to collaborate and share best practices amongst our peers.
Engaging with one Cloud Advisor gives you access to the hive mind – over 200 strong – with thought leaders from a variety of backgrounds and deep skills in industry, architecture, infrastructure, and application development.
While we benefit greatly from the paths blazed by our peers, no two engagements with a Cloud Advisor are exactly the same. Each client’s unique situation will dictate the path forward. For example, one of my Cloud Advisor colleagues recently shared their experience of working with a large multi-national corporation that wanted to evaluate OpenStack as a potential key component of their infrastructure. This has ultimately led to the creation of a strategic vision for cloud adoption that will see the client move their entire IT infrastructure to a global hybrid cloud – saving an estimated 25% of their total IT costs per year.
Another Cloud Advisor evaluated their clients three year cloud roadmap. Later, the Cloud Advisor responded with a counter plan which highlighted opportunities, suggested ways to streamline automation and paved the way for the IT organization to begin to broker services with off premises cloud providers.
Two Cloud Advisors, two unique stories, and two different starting points, but there was one common thread – the application of collective expertise to provide a better outcome.
