A couple of days ago, I had an important meeting. It’s just a few miles to my office by car, and I hit the road at 8 a.m. sharp; it’s the perfect time to avoid the world-famous Bangalore traffic. By and large it takes 20 to 30 minutes to reach my destination. However, today it consumed my precious one hour. Even thought I could still make it to the meeting on time, the incident I witnessed on the way really made me think.
I saw and heard the siren of an ambulance. There seemed to be absolutely no way an ambulance could reach the accident spot, but finally the ambulance made its way there with lots of struggle.
The time it took for an ambulance to reach the spot made me think on current situations in developing countries like India. Cities like Bangalore are witnessing phenomenal growth in vehicle population. According to the Bangalore city traffic police, the average speed of a vehicle during the peak hour is merely 15 kmph. According to any international standard this could be the worst traffic speed a city could have!
What is missing here?
I strongly believe cities like Bangalore essentially require an “intelligent management system,” which enables commuters and traffic cops to have real-time information, to help:
- leverage and analyze information to make smart decisions
- anticipate problems and unwanted situations to take appropriate actions
Using intelligent management solutions one can benefit by making the best use of historical and real-time data to predict traffic speed and volume and make decisions based on this information.
Let’s consider the above mentioned scenario: if the ambulance had the right information about the traffic, he could have avoided the jam by adopting an alternate route and reaching the accident spot and hospital faster. In another scenario, if traffic cops had real-time information they could have easily diverted the traffic to make way for ambulance. Or, the traffic management center could have directed the ambulance to adopt the best possible route.
We can think of many such scenarios.
