Just when you thought every iteration of 12/12/12 had been Tweeted and blogged about yesterday, we reflect on the top 12 announcements for IBM Cloud Computing in 2012. As you’ll see, 2012 was a momentous year for the IBM SmartCloud, having delivered what is arguably the industry’s broadest cloud portfolio – with public, private and hybrid enterprise solutions. Cloud is one of IBM’s four key growth plays and is expected to deliver $7 billion in revenue by 2015. Here are the top announcements from IBM’s cloud milestones this year:
- Led the open standards cloud movement and put its weight behind OpenStack: In April, IBM officially joined OpenStack as a major contributor to expand open standards in cloud computing, claiming a significant Cloud Standards and open source leadership position. In fact, as a Platinum Sponsor, IBM led the successful launch of the OpenStack Foundation with more than 140 companies and 2,600 community members. The foundation has since grown to 850 companies and 5,600 individual members, and IBM is now one of the largest contributors. IBM also contributed to the availability of the TOSCA specification for portable workloads across clouds. Further, IBM has also grown the Cloud Standards Customer Council (CSCC) to 400 members and contributed to the release of four significant CSCC deliverables including the ‘Practical Guide to Cloud Computing,’ ‘Practical Guide to SLAs,’ ‘Security for Cloud Computing: 10 Steps to Ensure Success’ and ‘The Impact of Cloud Computing on Healthcare.’ As Angel Diaz pointed out in a blog post, IBM has a long history of support for open standards and open source initiatives that provide the best value for our clients. IBM believes cloud standards will dramatically accelerate innovation to take this new computing model to the next level and greatly broaden its impact.
- Launched Platform-as-a-Service: IBM launched a new PaaS offering to help organizations build and deploy their own software applications quickly and effectively. IBM’s PaaS cloud computing platform, called SmartCloud Application Services, offers integrated middleware, monitoring, networks, servers and storage. IBM also issued SmartCloud Continuous Delivery to also help developers in the cloud. In addition, IBM’s Center for Applied Insight conducted a survey of more than 1,500 IT decision makers from 18 countries, which found that forward looking IT leaders are blazing the trail with early adoption of PaaS for business advantage – citing big data as the #1 reason. The study also showed that nearly 20 percent of respondents are currently using PaaS, although more than half recognize the opportunity.
- Delivered advanced private and hybrid cloud offerings – Foundations and PureSystems: Extending IBM’s leadership in the private/hybrid cloud space, IBM expanded its SmartCloud Foundations, a family of integrated cloud solutions and products with advanced provisioning, and introduced IBM PureSystems, which is becoming known for its superior cloud functionality and control. All PureSystems family members are built for the cloud, enabling corporations to quickly create private, self-service cloud offerings that can scale up and down automatically. IBM SmartCloud Foundation can quickly build and scale private and hybrid clouds with IaaS and PaaS capabilities. Thousands of clients are currently using these technologies.
- Helped MSPs capture the cloud, growing the global cloud ecosystem: As more clients embrace cloud computing, they are looking to local technology providers known as Managed Service Providers (MSP) to help them quickly develop cloud based services. IBM made a major play in helping these MSPs adopt the IBM Cloud, including access to global Centers of Excellence, dedicated marketing and sales support, PureSystems and SmartCloud capabilities, as well as financing options through IGF. Also, IBM’s Ready for IBM SmartCloud Services program continues to grow with new Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) and partners, making it easier for clients to quickly find technology from Business Partners that are certified for the IBM SmartCloud.
- Expanded SaaS, business solutions on the cloud: Through its acquisition of Kenexa, IBM cemented its leadership in helping clients embrace business insights from the enormous streams of information generated by social networks. To leverage the overlap of social, mobile and cloud, IBM launched IBM SmartCloud Docs, new cloud-based smarter commerce analytics, and helped provide insight on holiday retail trends and the shifting preferences of the digital consumer. As an industry leader in cloud-based software for Social Business, Smarter Commerce, Smarter Cities and Analytics, IBM runs more than $100 billion in commerce transactions a year in the cloud and there are more than 1 million enterprise application users are now working in the IBM Cloud. IBM also announced a collaboration with the Miami Dolphins to tap IBM’s smarter cities software on the IBM SmartCloud into Sun Life Stadium, enhancing the overall experience for fans of sports, music and media. We also announced that South Bend, Indiana is the first city in the world to manage its water systems in the cloud.
- Rolled out managed cloud service worldwide: IBM’s premier managed cloud service – SmartCloud Enterprise+ – rolled out in the U.S., Germany, France, Canada, Brazil, Japan and Australia. As a fully managed, security-rich and production-ready cloud environment designed to ensure enterprise-class performance and availability, SCE+ offers complete governance, administration and management control.
- Announced new highly secure managed cloud service with AT&T: IBM announced a business agreement with AT&T to deliver a highly secure, “network-enabled” cloud service that uses private networks rather than the public Internet. In 2013, the two companies plan to roll out the secure cloud service globally. The first-of-its-kind service combines IBM’s SmartCloud Enterprise+ with AT&T’s virtual private network for clients who demand the highest levels of security and availability.
- Issued breakthrough study showing cloud’s untapped opportunity for innovation: The IBM Institute for Business Value, in conjunction with the Economist Intelligence Unit, found that although cloud is widely recognized as a technology game changer, its potential for driving business innovation remains virtually untapped. The survey of 572 business and technology executives around the globe identifies the growth of cloud as a business transformation tool, not just an IT tool, finding six key cloud attributes can be used to power business model innovation.
- Accelerated cloud wins in growth markets: In growth markets, IBM is helping banks, universities, IT providers and cities gain innovation and efficiencies from cloud computing. In fact, growth markets represent about 22% of IBM Services current revenue but are estimated to be 60% of incremental revenue through 2015. In banking, IBM is working with three Indian co-operative banks for cloud computing – Pondicherry Co-operative Bank Ltd., Nawanagar Co-operative Bank Ltd., and Sree Charan Souharda Co-operative Bank Ltd. In higher education, IBM won business with the University of Lima, the University of Thai Chamber of Commerce and Pivotal Consultancy. In mobile, Monet Bank has selected an IBM cloud solution. Managed Service Providers including Vietnamese Prism, Filipino iOSS, Chinese IXTech Solutions, and Australian UltraServe and TestPro have all selected IBM cloud services.
- Delivered SmartCloud for SAP Applications: IBM made available IBM SmartCloud for SAP Applications in August. The managed service offering provides SAP platform as a service (PaaS) on IBM SmartCloud Enterprise+ for all SAP Business Suite and SAP Business Objects products. Ogilvy & Mather, an international advertising, marketing and public relations agency, is moving its current hosted SAP environment to the SmartCloud for SAP Applications.
- Delivered industry-specific cloud services, expertise: At the IFA consumer electronics event in Berlin, IBM unveiled a new cloud platform. For consumer electronics, IBM is powering the Philips Smart TV platform for Internet services, delivering greater interactivity to millions of TV viewers. In addition, through a collaboration with Vodafone, IBM is combining mobile communications and cloud computing for the remote management of ‘smart home’ appliances. IBM is also helping Cloud transform Telecommunications.
- Showcased the nexus of social, mobile, cloud and analytics at world’s elite sporting events, venues: IBM is bringing the value of social, mobile, cloud and analytics to the world’s foremost sporting events, including Wimbledon, U.S. Open (Golf & Tennis), and the French Open. Throughout the events, IBM SmartCloud private cloud is helping each tournament’s IT infrastructure scale to meet the spike in demand, while also applying advanced analytics and insight to transform the way fans watch and experience the game.
