For Rachel Reinitz, CTO and Founder of the IBM Cloud Garage, it has been an incredible five-year journey. More than anything, it has been the talented, collaborative people she's gotten to work with and the creation of value for our clients that have made it a great growth experience.
In the IBM Bluemix Garage, many things change day to day: the companies that come into our Garage locations, the innovative ideas that we are working on, developing, and testing, and so much more that goes on behind the scenes. As Savannah, one of our veteran developers in our San Francisco Garage once wrote, “To stay relevant, businesses,” including ours, “must learn how to keep up with the rapid growth of technology.” The Garages started with building apps on Bluemix, and since the beginning we have been expanding our scope, skills, and pulling in expertise from across IBM. We have expanded to focus on IoT, cognitive, and APIs. Our most well-known expansion is our extensive work on blockchain. Today I am pleased to announce that we are expanding and formalizing our focus on data science insights and analytics.
I am regularly asked what we actually do with clients at the IBM Bluemix Garage and frequently have to dispel misconceptions (which could easily make for their own amusing blog post). In short, we consult in a variety of ways, always focused on our core mission and leveraging our method. Since I get asked this so often, I figured it would be a good topic for a blog.
I’d like to provide you with a glimpse into what we do at the IBM Bluemix Garages based on my typical day at the San Francisco Garage. For context, I am the co-founder of the Bluemix Garages and the overall CTO –- so my day tends to be quite varied. I'm invigorated by the wide variety of work I get to do and the great people I work with in the Garages, across IBM, and with our clients. I learn new things every day and I enjoy the challenge and opportunity to take ideas and turn them into running systems that deliver value... and at the same time, improve IBM’s cloud products through what we learn on client engagements.
The Bluemix Garage is already proving to be an exciting and valuable approach to developing innovative applications with both new and existing IBM clients, ranging from startups to major enterprises. Responding to this strong interest and the success of the San Francisco Garage, we are expanding our global capability to the UK by opening our next Bluemix Garage in London.
