High-performance computing at IBM

High-performance computing (HPC) is the process of aggregating computing power in a way that delivers much higher performance than a typical desktop or workstation when solving large computational problems. Advanced solutions that require a lot of research can now be delivered faster than ever before through the use of high-performance computing technology. We believe HPC holds the key to unlocking the next big ground-breaking innovation that can change the world for the better.

HPC is used in a broad range of sectors, such as life sciences and genomics, computer-aided engineering and manufacturing, electronic design automation and semiconductors, and financial services.

The “supercomputing concept” was first introduced by IBM in the early 1920’s in the United States. IBM tabulators were the first step in helping achieve superior computational peak performance. Since then, IBM has continued to be at the forefront of delivering HPC innovation through systems, software, and services.
