IBM Cloud’s new database-as-a-service offering
While today’s business leaders want to automate tasks to eliminate human errors and security breaches, they don’t want to spend time on technical details. A database-as-a-service (DBaaS) offering provides businesses with professional databases that can be up and running in a matter of minutes without a lot of staff training. Software developers or database administrators can even administer their own databases using DBaaS.
What’s often not addressed in DBaaS offerings is the security perspective of the data. Examples of unauthorized user access, encryption details, or exposure of data by internal users have become public in the media, and the consciousness of eliminating these risks has strongly increased.
As business leaders look at moving to the cloud as a way to provide newer applications to engage with customers, data security becomes a primary concern. Examples of unauthorized user access, encryption of selected data only, or revelation by internal users have become public in the media, and the consciousness of eliminating these risks has strongly increased.
A DBaaS offering provides businesses with professional databases that can be up and running in a matter of minutes without a lot of staff training, and software developers can administer their own databases using DBaaS. However, enterprises (especially in highly regulated industries like Finance and Healthcare) are concerned about protecting highly confidential and sensitive customer data in the cloud, and they require complete data confidentiality in addition to ease of use.
Hyper Protect DBaaS: Secure, scalable, simple
IBM Cloud Hyper Protect DBaaS is the next evolution of databases in a scalable and security-rich cloud environment. It allows you to retain your data in a fully-encrypted database without the need for specialized skills.
Pervasive encryption is a consumable approach to enabling extensive encryption of data in flight and at rest to substantially simplify and speed encryption while achieving compliance mandates. Pervasive encryption is available with IBM Cloud Hyper Protect DBaaS.
The IBM Secure Service Container delivers a hyper-secure technology, containing its own embedded security mechanisms for securely hosting the DBaaS service. It prevents the threat of rogue insiders and snooping by privileged users, allowing only the data owner (client) to control the access to the data (no cloud admin access).
The IBM Cloud Hyper Protect DBaaS is based on LinuxONE hardware architecture known for its quality of service (reliability/resilience) and its capability for handling very large amounts of information with high performance.
Hyper Protect DBaaS is built on IBM LinuxONE Secure Service Container technology that provides complete data confidentiality through built-in workload isolation and tamper protection from privileged user access. This allows data owners to maintain complete control over their data, and no one—including cloud admins—has access to the data at any point. Additionally, LinuxONE provides unmatched vertical scalability and performance to support very large databases for mission-critical applications that require high performance and availability.
Hyper Protect DBaaS provides standard APIs to provision, manage, maintain, and monitor multiple database types, so it is easy for application developers to get started without the need to have specialized DBA skills.
IBM Cloud Hyper Protect DBaaS Beta service on the IBM Cloud
Starting today, the fully-managed IBM Cloud Hyper Protect DBaaS is up and operational as a Beta service. It contains support for MongoDB Enterprise Edition and PostgreSQL in a High Availability (3-node) configuration. It is well integrated into the IBM Cloud infrastructure and offers a single set of tools for the various databases.
Have a look, get familiar with Hyper Protect DBaaS technology, and see how easy you can leverage the values for your protecting your valuable assets—your data.
Here’s what you need to know
If you already have an existing instance, we ask you to move to the BETA service (available in the IBM Cloud main catalog—choose region/location “Washington DC”) since we are going to sunset the EXPERIMENTAL.
End of Experimental Date: November 30, 2018
As of November 30, 2018, new Hyper Protect DBaaS Experimental instances cannot be provisioned. However, existing instances will continue to be supported until the End of Experimental Support Date.
End of Experimental Support Date: Dec 30, 2018
- For a period of 30 days after the End of Experimental Date (through December 30, 2018), all existing instances will continue to be available on the Services dashboard in the IBM Cloud console. All existing instances will also continue to be supported by Hyper Protect DBaaS.
- Any instance still provisioned as of the End of Experimental Support Date will be deleted.
- Please delete your Hyper Protect DBaaS Experimental service instances before the End of Experimental Support Date.
Migration of Data
If you need to migrate data that you stored on your database, here is the Migration Plan from Experimental to Beta.
