Looking back at VMworld US 2018

VMworld 2018 US is VMware’s premier five-day conference in Las Vegas. From data centers to cloud, this conference is focused around accelerating the journey to a software-defined business. IBM and VMware have a long-standing partnership with joint solutions to help clients extend their on-premises VMware workloads to the IBM Cloud, and the IBM team was busy at work in the desert from August 26–30 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. The following are some of the highlights of this year’s conference.

Announcement: VMware vCloud Availability for vCloud Director on IBM Cloud

IBM Cloud and VMware continue to collaborate and deliver new solutions and services to help businesses extend their VMware workloads easily to the cloud. At VMworld, IBM Cloud announced the limited availability of VMware vCloud Availability for vCloud Director, a consumption-based disaster recovery solution that enables you to utilize your existing VMware tooling and extend your workloads to the IBM Cloud to access new features and capabilities like AI, blockchain, and IoT.

This continued expansion of the IBM Cloud for VMware Solutions enables clients to develop a hybrid cloud strategy with choice and flexibility.

IBM Booth: Live art exhibit, 35+ theater sessions, and Pepper the robot

Representing a variety of IBM businesses—including storage, cloud, and professional services—the IBM booth was a can’t-miss destination on the expo floor. With live artists from Mexico painting skateboards to Michael Dell stopping by to chat with Pepper the robot, there was always something new to experience each day. Tony Hawk and Rodney Mullen even made a guest appearance in the IBM booth to meet attendees and sign skateboards. With solution experts at demo peds and 35+ theater sessions, the booth covered a wide range of topics, including cloud migration, disaster recovery and back-up, security compliance automation, cognitive services, and more.

The 40+ custom painted skateboards from the show will be donated to the Tony Hawk Foundation.

Tony Hawk and Rodney Mullen talk innovation and skate culture

We had the opportunity to sit down with two skateboarding legends, Tony Hawk and Rodney Mullen, in a presentation hosted by IBM Cloud for VMware CTO, Simon Kofkin-Hansen. Each of these skateboarding pioneers have left an imprint on skating culture that continues to propel the sport forward. Like the IT industry, the skateboarding community is defined by constant innovation and the evolution of skills. New tricks are difficult to land by nature, and with every failed attempt there is agile evolution and resilient practice until they are perfected—a concept that is relatable for every professional in the IT industry.  Both Hawk and Mullen have contributed greatly to their industry by pushing boundaries and giving back to their community to help take skateboarding to the next level.

Looking ahead

Stay tuned for more announcements, activities, and sessions as we look towards VMworld Barcelona on November 4–8. Keep in touch on social (@IBMCloud) and check out the latest about IBM @ VMworld Europe.
