Speed up your WordPress with IBM Cloud

Using IBM Cloud to improve your WordPress experience

WordPress is one of the most popular content management systems available, but the many websites and blogs that use it experience issues with speed. As users install plugins and add blog content, site speed decreases over time. There are many factors contributing to this lag in speed, including PHP execution time, database load, CPU load, memory, and, of course, website traffic. This, in turn, can lead to revenue loss, traffic bounce, and decreased conversions and click-throughs.

At IBM Cloud, there are several solutions that can help alleviate some of these troubles and allow you to have a better and faster WordPress experience. I’ll go over some of them here:

Kusanagi Ready Project

The team at Prime Strategy created this premade image for IBM Cloud, complete with server-side configurations that set up the perfect environment for any WordPress installation. The image comes with an easy-to-setup GUI that allows users to select multiple configurations, carefully prescreened for an optimized WordPress experience. The customized image not only benefits WordPress installations but your general site as well. You can select between Nginx or Apache. You can also take advantage of PHP5, PHP7, or Facebook’s ultra-fast HHVM PHP handlers and optionally add APCu or OPCache.

If that sounds interesting, you’ll be excited to learn that the team at Prime Strategy compiled this on the latest centOS—centOS 7! Some of the reasons why you’d want to try out Kusanagi include increased caching, optimized PHP handlers, and custom configurations for both Apache and Nginx, offering a stable OS with long-term support.

In tests conducted by the Kusanagi team using the ab benchmark, the optimized WordPress loaded an impressive 1,000% faster than a regular installation! What’s even better is that SoftLayer now offers Kusanagi images for our customers to order servers from. You can choose between monthly or hourly virtual servers.

You can easily deploy Kusanagi without much configuration on IBM Cloud portal by following the steps here.

Aside from Kusanagi, you can also create a fresh LAMP stack and deploy WordPress with the latest versions by following this guide.

Scalable WordPress deployment on Kubernetes Cluster

Deploy the world’s most popular blogging platform on the Kubernetes cluster—the best container orchestration platform in the world. If you are planning to host a farm of WordPress sites or need to quick spin-up several, this guide shows the ease at which you can separate the different components of WordPress on different containers to have a high-performance environment.

This is a no-brainer, and with scaling involved, you can easily upgrade as necessary. You won’t be limited to the specs of a single server or worry about a random service failure being responsible for the entire website being down. This method will help increase reliability and uptime for your WordPress deployments. You can get the code for this deployment here at this link.

In addition to the links above, you can also deploy WordPress using IBM Cloud Apps by following the steps in the guide here.

Smarter WordPress

One of the best ways to make your WordPress better is to utilize Watson. This plugin from IBM Cognitive Class will help you to have meaningful interactions with visitors. In addition to analyzing past conversation, you can deploy chatbots that are trained to assist, retain, and make the WordPress experience better for all. If you are worried about how to make the chatbots work, there is also a free course included that covers all that you need to know. This free course will help answer any questions and it is something anyone can easily pick up on.
