Optimize NAS Storage Capacity, move inactive data to Cloud Object Storage

We all know the story: The amount of data created every day is growing exponentially. While some of this data may be accessed frequently, other data is not and is just consuming valuable primary storage space. Although amounts vary by company, many clients report that as much as 60 – 90 percent of their data is infrequently accessed within months of creation, and yet many often store and manage it in the same way as active data.

Many companies we talk to want to move inactive data off primary NAS storage to less expensive object storage. This frees up tier-1 storage capacity, curbing NAS expansions and saving on storage costs. In addition, many of our clients would like to leverage less expensive cloud storage for replication by keeping a copy of data in the cloud for redundancy and disaster recovery purposes. This takes advantage of the reduced cost and ease of cloud storage for backup. However, to date, there have been no easy approaches to identifying inactive or redundant data across hundreds or thousands of shares, and moving it without disrupting users. In an environment of rapid data growth and static budgets, this is a significant roadblock in data management.

You can analyze and move data from virtually any storage that supports NFS or SMB/CIFS mounts including NetApp Inc., Dell Inc. Dell EMC Isilon and Microsoft Corp. Windows File Servers applications.

Using sophisticated data analysis and interactive ROI visualization

You can set various data management objectives and play with “what if” scenarios to understand their projected impact on footprint and costs (see Figure 1). Komprise software interactively projects the:

  • How your data footprint at the source changes

You can target data based on age, source, file types or a combination of multiple requirements. Data can be exempt based on size, type or origin.

Move data with no changes to user and application access

Once satisfied, simply activate the plan and Komprise moves the data transparently to IBM Cloud Object Storage without using any proprietary agents or static links on the storage systems—mechanisms that have traditionally caused problems. The way users access files is designed to be transparent. Users and applications continue to see and access the data as they did before. The data is accessible both as files and as objects in IBM Cloud Object Storage, so applications can be run against the data natively in the cloud. An audit trail is created to understand what data has been moved. You can also use quick search to find data anywhere in your environment.
