Liberty Buildpack Updates: JRebel and security improvements

Share this post:

Since the beginning of the year, we have updated the Liberty buildpack a number of times. With each release of the buildpack we introduce new features, improve existing features or provide important fixes. Here are the key changes we have made since the start of the year:

  • JRebel integration: ZeroTurnaround’s JRebel is a tool that lets you perform instant updates on your application without redeploying or restarting the application. It saves countless hours and minutes waiting for the redeploy or restart to happen. We have enhanced the Liberty buildpack to integrate with JRebel to have the same instant update experience whether you are updating the application running on your workstation or running remotely on Bluemix. Currently, only stand-alone web applications are supported.
  • Liberty profile: We have updated version of the Liberty profile server based on the February beta. The new version of the Liberty profile server makes possible to preview and try out the upcoming Java EE 7 features directly in Bluemix. The new features include cdi-1.2, el-3.0, jca-1.7 or jsp-2.3. To use these features in Bluemix see using beta features for more information.
  • Security fixes: The latest buildpack contains an updated IBM JRE 7.1.2.11 with a security fix for the FREAK vulnerability. We also have addressed the Apache HttpComponents and Java overlay feature vulnerabilities.
  • SQL Database service plugin: The SQL Database service offers paid plans that provide an option for connecting with the database server over the SSL protocol. We have updated the Liberty buildpack to configure the runtime to connect with the database over SSL if the SSL connection information is available. Currently, the small and premium plans provide the SSL connection information.

Finally, to pick up the latest fixes and improvements, we have updated the Auto-Scaling service agent and the Monitoring and Analytics service data collector. We have upgraded the WebSphere eXtreme Scale Client to version 8.6.0.6. Also, we have improved the New Relic service integration to support user-defined services.

The latest Liberty Buildpack version is v1.14-20150319-1159.
