One of the great things about a cloud data service is that you don’t have to worry about upgrading versions of the software, or applying multiple fix packs. This is done for you automatically and on the fly—without any action on your part. This is a major benefit of the cloud and one of the many reasons why there is a rush to ‘as-a-service’ solutions.
Geospatial Analytics service is a beta IBM Bluemix offering that allows you to monitor devices as they move around the globe and enter or exit geographic regions of interest. In addition to monitoring device movement, there are a series of REST APIs that allow you to control the service state as well as manage defined geographic regions known as geofences.
The challenge with analytics has been two fold. First, the computational load resulted in processing subsets of data with tremendous hardware overheads. Secondly, it took a data scientist weeks, months, or years to give you useful analysis. The Bluemix team was excited to see a demonstration of IBM Blu Acceleration technology that made it possible to do on-the-fly analytics surfaced on a mobile application.
