Behind Every Guide Dog is a Data Story

Currently, as few as 37% of puppies make it through the raising program to become successful service dogs for the blind. Given that it costs Guiding Eyes more than $40,000 to raise each dog, even a 5% increase in performance can yield the non-profit considerable savings. The first step was to move all the data — which includes 30 years of structured genetic breeding data and thousands of unstructured questionnaire documents — to IBM Cloud.

A game changer for game designers

The process of creating repeatable details has presented an age-old problem for artists, and it hasn’t evolved much throughout history. Many of the same tools and techniques cavemen used to decorate their caves and Michelangelo employed to paint the Sistine Chapel are still in use today. Michelangelo used a little wooden stick to create his masterpiece. Today, when artists are making video games, they use little plastic sticks. Modern tools have helped, but fundamentally it’s the same process. Typically, artists who design games spend huge amounts of time creating background elements, such as landscapes, or figures, like armies. One house could take hours to design and create, and a whole street or village might take days or even weeks to build.

A bet on cloud pays big

When Sonian launched its cloud-based email archiving solution in 2007, the company was ahead of the curve. “Our founders took a bet that cloud was going to be the future for how enterprises store and retrieve information,” says Derek Peplau, Sonian Vice President of Marketing. “We like to think that we were cloud before it was cool.” Considering the current mass adoption of cloud computing models, it’s a bet that paid off big. “We’ve seen the model proven out,” says Peplau. “And we’ve been there since day one.”
