New Bluemix look Ready to Use
We have been listening to your feedback on the Bluemix UI and have used that to design a brand new user experience (UX) that we believe will streamline many workflows. The new experience is now live for your immediate use. When you visit the Bluemix UI, you can choose to opt-in for the new experience via a “try the new Bluemix” link in the header bar:
Once switched, you can go back to the original design at any time using the “Go to Classic Experience” link:
New Landing Page
The first thing you’ll notice after logging into the new experience is a brand new landing page that presents a set of categories that include all of the resources you can create and manage on the Bluemix platform:
- All Categories – Allows you to view all of your Compute resource (e.g. CF Apps, Containers, and Virtual Servers) plus your service instances on one page. This is equivalent to the Dashboard in the classic UI
- Compute – Allows you to work with all of your Compute resources which include CF Apps, OpenWhisk, Containers and VMs. If you are working in a specific area like “Data & Analytics” or Compute or others, we have created specific dashboards that are tailored for your needs
- Service Categories (Network, Storage, Data & Analytics, Watson, Integrate, DevOps, Security, Application Services, Mobile, Internet of Things, and Custom APIs) – Allows you to work with service instances created within the chosen category
Note that these categories are always available for selection from the main header as well. This allows you change context from any part of the new UI.
Finding Resources to Create
On all dashboard pages in the new UI, there’s a “+” (add) button that allows you to explore Bluemix compute and service offerings and create them. This is analogous to the Catalog in the classic experience.
The search and filter lets you to search for any compute or service offering. In addition, you can filter by IBM, Third Party, Beta, Community, and services private to your organization.
The left hand navigation bar allows you to filter by category. For example, in the screen shot below Data & Analytics is selected and the catalog is limited to Data & Analytics offerings..
The new catalog still contains a labs section where you can explore experimental compute and service offerings. To look at these, you can click on “Bluemix Experimental Services” link at the bottom of the “All Categories” page.
Creating a Compute Resource
Now that you’ve seen the basics of navigating the new catalog, let’s walk through the updated flow for creating a new CF App. The basic flow is the same for other compute resources such as Containers and Virtual Servers.
- Click on the Compute category in the left hand navigation bar which lists types for CF Applications, Containers, and Virtual Servers.
- Click on CF Applications to see the list of boilerplates and runtimes to create an application in the CloudFoundry platform-as-a-service layer.
- Select the boilerplate or runtime that you want to use.
- On the “Create a CF Application” page, provide the application name and host name, then click Create. Your app will be created and soon ready to run!
Application Details Pages
Once an app is created, you can go to the Application Details page to manage and see detailed information about your app. In the new UI, most of the features from the classic experience still exist but has been redesigned.
Let’s explore the tabs and new organization:
- Getting Started – Provides you instructions to start coding your application using the Bluemix CLIs, DevOps Services, or Eclipse tools for Bluemix
- Overview – Provides an overview of the application runtime, logs, memory, connections (services), delivery pipeline, and cost
- Runtime — Fine tune your runtime instances, change the environment variables, and view your application files
- Connections – Enables you to connect your application to existing or new service instances.
- Logs – Provides recent logs for your app (with new log entries appended as your app logs them)
- Monitoring – Shows application availability details.
Service Instance Details
Once you’ve created a service, you can manage it from the new and improved Service Instance Details page. When the Manage tab is selected, you can view a service dashboard specific to the service offering (in this case Message Hub):
The Service Credentials tab allows you to manage service credentials so that you can create (or revoke) keys that can be used from your code outside of the Bluemix environment:
The Connections tab is a new addition that allows you to see connections between the service and other services or CF applications. In addition, the tab can be used to add a new connection to a CF application.
In addition to the new category menu mentioned earlier, there are some other notable changes to the header: In particular, the right corner shows your name, your selected Bluemix organization, and your selected space. If you click on it, a “support widget” will open:
From the support widget, you can:
- Manage your account
- Choose to view resources from a different region, org, or space.
- Manage your support tickets or submit ideas to Bluemix team
The Bluemix Docs have also received a facelift. This is the place to go if you want to learn more about Bluemix, or have questions about its services, pricing, or architectural considerations
