Today the Cloud Foundry Foundation is establishing a formal certification process for Cloud Foundry and announcing the first wave of Cloud Foundry Certified offerings:
IBM Bluemix, CenturyLink AppFog, HPE Helion Cloud Foundry, Huawei FusionStage, Pivotal Cloud Foundry, SAP HANA Cloud Platform and Swisscom Application Cloud are among the first certified offerings. This fulfills one of the promises we the foundation made at its launch.
This is hugely important for consumers, as it helps them make informed decisions regarding their investment in PaaS, and it will help to keep the community focused on interoperability and portability of workload.
This program has been carefully designed to ensure that products that claim the Cloud Foundry branding are built from the same CF release that is published by the development community. It also ensures that the code has not been modified except to address fixes that are back-ported or up-streamed to the community and picked up in the next release.
We hope that this new program will help instill a sense of confidence in PaaS consumers that the CF vendor community is committed to ensuring that interoperability and portability are a top priority for all, and establish Cloud Foundry as the industry standard Cloud Application Platform.
Will vendors be able to differentiate? Yes, of course. Each will have its own UI/UX to complement the CLI and public APIs that must be exposed un-altered. Each may add services that they feel are of value to their customers, but the router, DEAs, Cloud Controller, UAA and Health Manager or Diego components, etc. are all exactly the same.
So, if you haven’t given Cloud Foundry a try, now is the time! Whether it’s through IBM Bluemix, or an offering from Pivotal, HPE, SAP or any of the other vendors announcing that their offerings are Cloud Foundry Certified, you can be confident that they are all running the exact same code.
