While the value of cloud is clear, many enterprises still face significant challenges around successful adoption. This is especially true for enterprises with sensitive data and workloads that must remain on-premises in order to address key security and compliance requirements.

The core challenge that many companies are finding around on-premises cloud—particularly when it comes to platforms—is an inability to successfully balance cost, agility and quality of service. Given the rapid pace of innovation and change in the industry, many enterprises also want to ensure that entry points into cloud are coupled with clear paths to a more expansive cloud strategy – a strategy that will almost inevitably include a mixture of on and off-premises infrastructure and services.

To help address these challenges, today we are thrilled to round out the foundation of our approach to hybrid cloud with the introduction of Bluemix Local.

Operating your own on-premises cloud platform is complex

While many enterprise customers are becoming increasingly sophisticated in the way they deliver IaaS, anything on top of that is still a real challenge.

At the platform layer you are no longer responsible for only compute, networking and storage – but runtimes, databases, analytics, integration and security services, developer and operations tools and the list goes on. And these services are now brought to market on a development cycle built around continuous innovation and delivery.

This confluence introduces truly substantial operational challenges to take advantage of cloud platforms and services in a reliable, cost-effective way.

Public as the first step toward Local

We have been operating the Bluemix public cloud deployment for over 18 months and are thrilled it has grown to over 120 services and now welcomes over 15,000 new users a week. That experience has helped us develop unique expertise—especially around the new, core open source components like Cloud Foundry, Docker & OpenStack—associated with operations, delivery, scalability, performance, HA and more.

That expertise—combined with a lot of automation—is what makes Bluemix Local possible.

Bluemix Local is a cloud service delivered via Relay

We are delivering Bluemix Local as-a-service and through a model centered around ongoing collaboration with your IT team. It is an approach that will enable your IT and application development teams to take advantage of the cloud—of new services, features and updates to open source —and do so in a way that doesn’t involve building a new DevOps organization.

Relay is what makes it possible

Relay is a new delivery mechanism for on-premises cloud that enables us to help keep your Bluemix Local deployment healthy and up-to-date. New platform updates are run through a consistent testing and validation process that involves initially pushing code to our staging environments, then our own internal Bluemix deployment, then to our public and dedicated environments.

The final stage of that journey is that these updates are relayed into your local cloud leveraging our secure CI/CD pipeline.

Bluemix Local - how it works

These updates are then made available in your Admin Console and you can then easily control your maintenance window and apply windows of time when you are most comfortable bringing those updates into your environment.

Relay in Action

One experience across all of Bluemix

Because all of Bluemix is operated through a single, consistent update and release process, the core fabric across every environment is identical. This characteristic provides teams with tremendous flexibility to easily move apps and services from local into public or dedicated over time.

All Bluemix deployment models are also bound together by a single admin console and services catalog.

Admin console
The Bluemix Admin Console Across your entire Bluemix environment, the admin console enables your team to control timing around incoming platform updates, approve and manage access to services, onboard users, view and manage quota by orgs and deep dive into system information, logs and reports.

Syndicated catalog
Bluemix Syndicated Catalog Through our approach to catalog syndication, your development teams get access to a single view services (including custom/your own) that includes local services and any services you approve from the public catalog. This enables your development teams to optimize composite apps by locating individual services within the deployment model that best suits specific needs around elasticity, security, cost and performance.

Pricing

The pricing for Bluemix Local is based on a subscription and allocation model. You have one monthly bill and it is driven by the size of your environment you’d like to create.

It’s only the beginning

Today, Bluemix Local is shipping with Cloud Foundry based runtimes, catalog syndication, data cache and API Management. And this is only the beginning. We delivered over 120 services in our public cloud over the last 18 months and will bring that same pace of innovation and delivery to local as well.

And when new services are available, quickly taking advantage of them will be easier than ever before. Because they will simply come in over Relay.

We hope that you’re as excited about Bluemix Local as we are and if you’d like to learn we encourage you to check out our website and contact us for more information.
