What is Red Hat OpenShift on IBM Cloud?

Red Hat OpenShift on IBM Cloud launched August 1, 2019, and it is a managed service that simplifies deployment and configuration of the OpenShift Container Platform. As a managed service, IBM will automate initial provisioning and ongoing maintenance, including operating system patches, vulnerability remediation and any updates in the OpenShift stack. 

Why Managed OpenShift on IBM Cloud Satellite?

Throughout the IBM Cloud Satellite beta, we heard time and time again about the challenges our customers are facing when architecting, deploying and maintaining OpenShift clusters in their data center. Using Managed OpenShift on IBM Cloud Satellite enables customers to leverage their existing OpenShift subscription in a managed environment, enabling those teams to focus on delivering line of business objectives.

The IBM Cloud Satellite docs provide details for deployment and configuration of your Satellite Locations. Log into IBM Cloud and navigate to the Catalog by searching for Satellite.

I will create a location in AWS by providing my access key ID and secret access key:

After the location deploys successfully, you will see an overview of that Satellite instance:

On the remaining three nodes that are unassigned in my IBM Cloud Satellite location on AWS, I will deploy a Red Hat OpenShift on IBM Cloud cluster to that AWS infrastructure. Back in the IBM Cloud catalog, search for OpenShift. The biggest difference is selecting Satellite as your infrastructure choice, then choosing the Satellite location in AWS:

After the cluster deploys, I am now running a fully managed OpenShift cluster that IBM will maintain, but it is running in AWS:

Just like the Managed OpenShift clusters running on IBM Cloud infrastructure, a cluster deployed on IBM Cloud Satellite is managed by IBM:
