Use Domain Name System (DNS) services to resolve hostnames and IPs in your IBM Cloud VPC networks.
IBM is pleased to announce the general availability of the IBM® Cloud® DNS Services (private DNS for virtual private cloud) offering. With IBM Cloud DNS Services, you can leverage hostname-to-IP resolution for your IBM virtual private cloud (VPC) computing instances, simplifying your network experience by avoiding the need to remember complex IP addresses when trying to initiate connectivity within and between your VPC networks.
Create DNS zones and manage name resolution from permitted VPCs
IBM Cloud DNS Services provides a central service for connectivity, making it easier to resolve and manage hostname-to-IP records for your IBM VPC networks within your IBM Cloud account. You can create DNS zones, which are the domains (e.g., example.com) or subdomains (e.g., test.example.com) that you control. Then, you can populate these DNS zones with DNS records—such as hostnames or IP addresses—and control which of your VPC networks can access this sensitive information. The service can simplify the management of your virtual networks as you migrate or build new, cloud native applications using multiple IBM Cloud VPC instances.
Ease management of multiple DNS zones and records
IBM Cloud DNS Services can support DNS zones for multiple VPC networks within your account, easing the management of your IBM Cloud VPC environment. By using private DNS zones, you can use your own custom domain names and tailor your virtual network architecture to best suit your organization’s needs.
As your IBM Cloud VPC environment grows, IBM Cloud DNS Services can support DNS hostname resolution for your expanded environment of VPC networks. You will be able to simplify and secure the DNS management of your VPC environment by managing multiple zones and records. And with only a few steps, you can change the name-resolution settings on your virtual server instances (VSIs) and begin to leverage DNS services.
Secure your private-network DNS records
IBM Cloud DNS Services offer built-in security capabilities for enhanced control. In addition, access to add/remove/modify information in DNS zones is controlled by IBM Cloud Identity and Access Management software, so you can easily define access policies for users and resources in your account.
As a security administrator for your service, you can assign IBM Cloud Identity and Access Management roles that correspond to the specific IBM Cloud DNS Services permissions you want to grant to members of your team. Additionally, security officers, auditors, or managers can use the integrated capabilities of the IBM Cloud Activity Tracker with LogDNA software records to track user-initiated activities that change the state of a service. This can be helpful to investigate abnormal activity and critical actions and to comply with regulatory audit requirements.
