Exploring migration options for customers using Db2 Hosted.

As more businesses realize their digital transformation journey and the backend technology  necessary to support that transformation, they are looking to Db2 to support their mission critical workloads. Employing the world-class Db2 11.5 engine and operating with the wealth of features only available within the Db2 family, Db2 on Cloud has become the focus for enterprises, large and small, operating on cloud. 

IBM has shifted much of its focus from on-premises and hosted technology to cloud, as cloud offers businesses the agility and speed to compete in today’s marketplace. As a result, offerings such as Db2 Hosted will no longer be strategic to IBM’s data management business. Customers using Db2 Hosted can migrate to Db2 on Cloud and experience seamless data federation between on-prem workloads, secure data in an extremely redundant and highly available architecture, and much more.

Dates you should know

Starting November 30, 2020, all Db2 Hosted customers will no longer be supported on Db2 Hosted systems. IBM will honor current contracts and will work directly with customers impacted by this change in offering. The goal is to have customers experience offerings with more features and services, while still enjoying the benefits found within Db2. If your business is impacted by this change, please review the timeline and migration information to identify next steps:

If your contract expires between now and November 30, 2020, consider the following options:

  • IBM Db2 on Cloud: A fully managed, cloud SQL database built for enterprise-level OLTP performance. Db2 on Cloud includes elastic scaling of compute and storage, self-service backup and point-in-time restore, and the ability to copy a database from one service instance to another.
  • IBM Db2 Warehouse on Cloud: A fully managed, elastic cloud data warehouse built for high-performance analytics and machine learning. Db2 Warehouse on Cloud includes elastic scaling of compute and storage, self-service backup and restore, and in-database machine learning.
  • IBM Cloud Pak for Data: If you need direct access to the cluster or want to control your own software stack and updates, you should consider Cloud Pak for Data. You can run your Red Hat OpenShift cluster on IBM Cloud (or another cloud provider of your choice), or you can run in on your private, on-premises cluster.

Contact IBM Cloud support or your customer success manager to outline the best possible migration path for your business.

If your contract expires after November 30, 2020 or your contract was established through IBM Cloud, consider the following options:

  • We recommend meeting with your customer success manager to create a custom migration plan tailored to your account. 
  • We recommend meeting with your customer success manager to determine an appropriate timeline for your monthly subscription to end.
