As the new year begins, I have been reflecting on many client conversations from 2021 and there are some common themes emerging: acceleration of digital transformation, a continued shift to a hybrid cloud model, and how best to stay ahead with technology in a continually evolving landscape to provide a competitive edge in the marketplace.

Modernization of existing IT resources (applications, data, and infrastructure) is a critical consideration when clients are looking to operate across a hybrid ecosystem.  Many of these resources reside on IBM Z, so the conversation starts with an understanding of how IBM Z is an integral part of hybrid cloud, delivering additional value for a client’s business. We continue to develop powerful, highly efficient tools and solutions for modernizing Z resources to accelerate digital initiatives that can be employed without the need for high risk, high cost, and time-consuming application migrations.

IBM Z is all in on hybrid cloud with ongoing investments in open-source technologies and cloud software solutions as we deliver a consistent and integrated experience, enabling businesses to optimize deployment of new innovative services across a hybrid infrastructure.

Today I am pleased to announce another big step forward with the IBM Z and Cloud Modernization Stack. The IBM Z and Cloud Modernization Stack brings together capabilities from across our IBM Z software portfolio into a flexible and integrated platform to support z/OS-based application modernization, cloud native development, and standardized IT automation.

The IBM Z and Cloud Modernization Stack is designed to help clients:

  • Simplify access to applications and data through secured API creation and integration.
  • Leverage agile enterprise DevOps for cloud native development with open tools common to the industry and rapid application analytics.
  • Standardize IT automation and empower developers.

The history of the central processing unit (CPU)

10 min read - The central processing unit (CPU) is the computer’s brain. It handles the assignment and processing of tasks, in addition to functions that make a computer run. There’s no way to overstate the importance of the CPU to computing. Virtually all computer systems contain, at the least, some type of basic CPU. Regardless of whether they’re used in personal computers (PCs), laptops, tablets, smartphones or even in supercomputers whose output is so strong it must be measured in floating-point operations per…
