Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between IaaS, PaaS and SaaS?

IaaS means a vendor provides clients with pay-as-you-go access to storage, networking, servers and other computing resources in the cloud.

With PaaS, a service provider offers access to a cloud-based environment in which users can build and deliver applications. The provider supplies the underlying infrastructure.

And in the case of SaaS, a service provider delivers software and applications through the internet. Users subscribe to the software and access it via the web or vendor APIs.

What are the advantages of IBM PaaS?

IBM PaaS gives users a suite of prebuilt tools they can use to develop, customise, test and host their own applications in one environment. Recently IBM worked with Westpac to place over 70% of their entire portfolio within cloud based systems allowing their staff more convenient access from across multiple locations. Find out more about our work with Westpac here.

Our service enables organisations to focus on development without having to worry about underlying infrastructure, because providers manage security, operating systems, server software and backups. Even if your teams work remotely, IBM PaaS facilitates collaborative work.

What type of organisations benefit from using IBM PaaS?

Development organisations that want to implement agile methodologies are the most suited for IBM PaaS. It can save money when developing new services and applications, and they can be released more quickly than usual to get user feedback.  The speed and efficiency of IBM’s PaaS service allows for minimal disruption to business process whilst allowing for the company to develop their processes. This was at the forefront of our work with Westpac, where maintaining (and continually improving) PaaS generated improved banking efficiency throughout the company. You can read more about it here.

How does IBM PaaS compare to other PaaS products?

IBM PaaS is designed to allow easy development of information architecture, enabling better classification and more intuitive findability. It's also well suited for building full-stack web architectures with micro services and mobile front ends.

How are IBM PaaS costs calculated?

IBM PaaS costs are based on a utility billing model, meaning users pay only for what they use. This is in contrast to the costs of a user maintaining their own hardware and software infrastructure, which can represent significant savings. Further information on pricing can be found here.

Where can I find out more about IBM PaaS?

You can learn more about IBM PaaS, IBM SaaS and IBM IaaS on our Cloud Services Models page (US).
