IP Compression

The IP Payload Compression protocol (IPComp) reduces the size of IP datagrams by compressing the datagrams to increase the communication performance between two partners.

The intent is to increase overall communication performance when the communication is over slow or congested links. IPComp does not provide any security and must be used along with either an AH or an ESP transform when the communication occurs over a VPN connection.

The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) formally defines IPComp in Request for Comments (RFC) 2393, IP Payload compression Protocol (IPComp). You can view this RFC on the Internet at the following Web site: http://www.rfc-editor.org.
