Installing new hardware for logical partitions
When you install new hardware in a partitioned environment, be aware of these items:
- Verify that your logical partition configuration is current. You might need to clear non-reporting resources from your LPAR configuration.
- Empty positions on a shared bus might not be owned by a partition. They should be assigned to the partition you want before installing new adapters in them.
- A new device is owned by the logical partition which owns the I/O processor (IOP) to which the device is attached.
- A new IOP or IOA is owned by the partition which owns the dedicated bus.
- A new IOP or IOA is owned by the partition which owns the empty position on a shared bus.
- The primary partition owns a new system bus.
- New processors and memory are available (unassigned) to be assigned to any partition.
- When adding or removing new disk units to your system you might need to clear partition configuration data on the device.
- New 5250 interactive CPW is assigned across partitions by the percentage specified in the create wizard. After an upgrade, ensure partitions are not assigned more 5250 interactive CPW than they can use.
The recommended approach to installing an IOP or IOA is to perform the following steps:
- Use the clear non-reporting logical partition resources option to remove resources that are no longer available, that are listed twice, or that are no longer on the server.
- Assign empty positions to the partition you want.
- Install the new hardware using the Installing hardware information.
Note - SRC Error B600 5390: The recommended procedure for an upgrade is to turn on the system to DST after adding the new resources (memory and I/O expansion units specifically), and adjust the minimum, current, and maximum for the partition memory as necessary. A logical partition configuration error usually indicates that the partition to which you are installing the new hardware does not have enough minimum memory to restart. To increase the minimum memory for the partition, reconfigure the partition memory using System i® Navigator or the character-based interface. When you reconfigure the partition memory, the system provides suggested minimum memory.
