Adding a new I/O adapter on a partitioned server

When adding a new I/O adapter in a partitioned environment, make detailed preparation before starting the new I/O adapters installation. Use this information to help prepare to install a new I/O adapter and perform resource management.

A new I/O adapter installation causes changes to the server resources. If this new I/O adapter installation requires adding a new expansion unit, new bus numbers are assigned to the primary partition by default and need to be reassigned to the correct partition before the partition can be turned on.

Some new resource names might be created. The new resource names need to be reassigned or renamed as appropriate.

Recommendation: It is highly recommended that all of the logical partition (LPAR) configuration actions be performed by an LPAR-trained service representative.

LPAR Planning and Implementation services provide a planning session to discuss customer requirements and to provide a final configuration and implementation plan for hardware and software. The LPAR service representative can also install and configure the new LPAR configuration. For more information about Integrated Technology Services (ITS) LPAR Planning and Implementation services, contact your IBM marketing representative, or IBM Business Partner, or see Technical Support Services.

Note: There are potentially billable activities for moving existing features associated with installing a new I/O adapter. Any other relocation or movement of features or server components is a billable service, which requires a contract for services with IBM. For example, if hardware or features need to be physically rearranged within your system to install auxiliary cache storage, the relocation and movement of the hardware or features is a billable service.
