Scratch tapes in an automated tape library are kept in a common pool based on cartridge type. The system may select any volume from this group to satisfy a nonspecific tape mount. If the tape is rejected during volume verification, then the volume is placed in an error category. These volumes become ineligible for subsequent scratch mount requests until the error is corrected.
