MAP 3241

Use this MAP to resolve the following problem: Multiple controllers are not capable of similar functions or of controlling the same set of devices (SRN nnnn-9074) for a PCIe2 or a PCIe3 controller.

Step 3241-1

This error relates to adapters connected in a multi-initiator and high availability configuration. To obtain the reason or description for this failure, you must find the formatted error information in the AIX® error log. This also contains information about the attached adapter in the Remote Adapter field.

Display the hardware error log. View the hardware error log as follows:

  1. Follow the steps in Examining the hardware error log and return here.
  2. Select the hardware error log to view. In the hardware error log, the Detail Data section contains the reason for failure and the values for Remote Adapter Vendor ID, Product ID, Serial Number, and World Wide ID fields.
  3. Go to Step 3241-2.

Step 3241-2

Find the reason for failure and information for the attached adapter (remote adapter) that is shown in the error log, and perform the action listed for the reason in the following table:

Table 1. RAID array reason for failure
Reason for failure Description Action Adapter on which to perform the action
The secondary adapter does not support RAID level being used by the primary adapter. The secondary adapter detected that the primary has a RAID array with a RAID level that the secondary adapter does not support. The customer needs to upgrade the type of the secondary adapter or change the RAID level of the array on the primary to a level that is supported by the secondary adapter. Physically change the type of adapter that logged the error. Remote adapter indicated in the error log.
The secondary adapter does not support disk function being used by the primary adapter. The secondary adapter detected a device function that it does not support. The customer might need to upgrade the adapter microcode or upgrade the type of the secondary adapter. Adapter that logged the error.
The secondary adapter is unable to find devices found by the primary adapter. The secondary adapter cannot discover all the devices that the primary adapter has. Verify the connections to the devices from the adapter logging the error.

View the disk array configuration display to determine the SAS port with the problem.

Adapter that logged the error.
The secondary adapter found devices not found by the primary adapter. The secondary adapter has discovered more devices than the primary. After this error is logged, an automatic failover will occur. Verify the connections to the devices from the remote adapter as indicated in the error log.

View the disk array configuration display to determine the SAS port with the problem.

Remote adapter indicated in the error log.
The secondary port not connected to the same numbered port on primary adapter.

SAS connections from the adapter to the devices are incorrect. Common disk expansion drawers must be attached to the same numbered SAS port on both adapters.

The failure can also be caused by incorrect cabling to device enclosure. Ensure that Y0 cable, YI cable, or X cable is routed along the right side of the rack frame, as viewed from the rear, when connecting to a disk expansion drawer.

Verify the connections and recable SAS connections as necessary. Either adapter.
The primary adapter lost contact with disks accessible by the secondary adapter. The primary adapter is unable to link to the devices. An automatic failover will occur. Verify the cable connections from the adapter that logged the error. Possible disk expansion drawer failure. Adapter that logged the error.
Caching Disabled. Replace the remote adapter with an adapter that is the same type as the adapter that logged this error. A CCIN 57B5 adapter is connected to a CCIN 57BB adapter. These adapters are not compatible. The CCIN 57BB will log this error and prevent either adapter from Write Caching. Identify the CCIN 57B5 adapter that is paired with the CCIN 57BB adapter that is logging the error and replace it with a CCIN 57BB adapter. Remote adapter indicated in the error log.

When the problem is resolved, see the removal and replacement procedures topic for the system unit on which you are working and do the "Verifying the repair" procedure.
