customizable web-based client application that provides access to object store content and workflow
processing. Application Engine can also
administer the process management-related features of IBM®
FileNet® Content Manager
About this task
IBM Content Navigator is the functional replacement for Application Engine, which is deprecated from IBM FileNet Content Manager in this release. For more information about installing IBM Content Navigator, see Planning, installing, and configuring IBM Content Navigator.
You can run IBM Content Navigator and Application Engine on the same IBM FileNet P8 system.
You must install Application Engine if you are running the following features because they are not supported by IBM Content Navigator.
- Rendition Engine publishing
- Process Simulator
- Workflow components that use the legacy IBM FileNet Content Manager
- Custom applications that were developed by using the IBM FileNet Web Application Toolkit
- Installing Application Engine
To enable the web client application, Workplace, install Application Engine on a supported web application server. To complete the installation, provide the necessary parameter values to enable Workplace to access the information that is managed by Content Platform Engine. - Installing Application Engine software updates
Install the latest updates to Application Engine. - Installing the latest Content Platform Engine Client files on Application Engine servers
The Content Platform Engine Client software enables communication between the Application Engine and Content Platform Engine. Install the Content Platform Engine client software that matches the release level of the Content Platform Engine server software. - Configuring Application Engine on the application server
After you complete the Application Engine installation, you configure your Application Engine. - Deploying Application Engine on the application server
After you install and configure Application Engine, you must deploy your client application, Workplace, on your application server. You might be required to re-create the WAR or WAR and EAR files before you deploy. - Setting Application Engine bootstrap preferences
By successfully signing in to Workplace and saving the bootstrap preferences, you verify basic Application Engine functionality such as user authentication as well as communication and storing of data in Content Engine. 
Updating Application Engine settings in a load balanced environment
You can update Application Engine settings in a load balanced Application Engine environment consisting of a load balancer or proxy device, several HTTP servers and several application server instances.
