Starting and stopping Application Engine

You can start and stop Application Engine by using graphical user interface or command line instructions.

About this task

Application Engine consists of the following components: Workplace and workflow-related processes. This topic includes detailed instructions for starting and stopping both.

The following procedures assume that you are using Process Task Manager to manage the legacy Component Manager. Alternatively, you can configure a WebLogic application server or IBM® WebSphere® Application Server to automatically start and stop Component Manager.

Procedure

Tip: You can configure various options for automatic startup. In order to provide you with all of the steps required to start this component, the following procedure assumes that no automatic startup options have been configured. Click Automatic startup tip for instructions on enabling automatic startup for a step. Where automatic startup is configured, the related step becomes unnecessary.

Follow the instructions for the appropriate action:
Action Steps
Startup
Start the Workplace application:
  1. Start the application server software:

Use the startup procedures specified by your application server software vendor.

Start the workflow-related processes. The steps in this section assume you are using Process Task Manager to manage Component Manager. If you have configured the application server to automatically start and stop Component Manager, you can go directly to the last step to start the component queues.

  1. Start the workflow processes:
    GUI (Windows only)
Use the Windows Services console to start the Process Application Engine Services Manager service. Automatic startup tip
    Command line
Restriction: For legacy components, you must first enable automatic startup for Component Manager.
    Windows:
    net start "VWServicesAE"
    UNIX:

Application Engine does not have a corresponding daemon that must be started. However, if you have enabled any workflow-related features for automatic startup, you can start them at this time by entering the following command from the command line:

    routercmd.sh -autostart
  2. For legacy components, start Component Manager: Automatic startup tip
    1. If it is not already open, open Process Task Manager.
    2. Select the Component Manager node and click Start on the toolbar.
  3. For legacy components, start component queues. Automatic startup tip
    1. If it is not already open, open Process Task Manager.
    2. Expand the Component Manager node, select each component, and click Start on the toolbar.
The following table lists component queues that are required by each FileNet P8 component.
